A small, quiet, back-to-basics resort with superb diving

Helengeli is a small island with limited creature comforts, at least compared to the larger resorts. Rooms are simple and unassuming, as is the food, and the bar. Nonetheless it has a charming and unpretentious 'back-to-basics' vibe, perfect if you just want to lounge around the pool if the company of few others. Service is friendly, smiling and genuine.

The beach was suffering some severe erosion when we visited, but most visitors to Helengeli seemed to be there for the diving. While far from a bargain, the dive school has access to some of the best sites in North Male atoll.

Overall, this is a very laid-back resort and is recommended for diving couples. It is also extremely good value, and a great way to visit   a resort in the Maldives for sub $150 a night.
